Implications To Your Organization

How high in the organization do I need to go to have this work?

The ideal place to start in any organization is with the CEO/President.  It is not impossible to start at a lower level and push the methodology up the organization, but it may be more difficult.  In this case, it is essential to get approval from the manager one level up.  As BPE is achieved in the business unit, upper management will undoubtedly see the progress and may wish to spread BPE to other business units.  Back

How long does BPE/BPT take to implement?

The time to implement BPT depends on the motivation of the management team and their willingness to commit resources to achieving BPE.  Within a week, an organization can have a Vision, Mission, Value Proposition, Model for Strategic Differentiation, Level I/II CPM Matrix, and Strategic Plan.  The time to cascade the whole BPT model throughout the organization and achieve BPE really depends on:

The size of the organization and the number of locations
The number of managerial (span of control) levels
The commitment of the top-level manager
The economic condition of the firm when you start
The number of previous failed attempts
The sophistication and general education level of the management team, supervisors, work force; knowledge of strategic planning and statistical methods
The number of programs of the month previously experienced
Cultural barriers with respect to what country you are in  Back

How will BPE affect company culture?

The effect BPE has on company culture depends on the company culture to begin with.  The less aligned with the overall vision and mission and less data-driven the organization, the more of a change your organization can expect to see.  Back

What is the implication on employee morale?

As with any management technique, there may be the occasional naysayer and employee who feels threatened by anything new.  However, experience shows that BPT helps to provide a highly integrated organization where everyone knows his/her responsibility and how they fit in and contribute to the vision, mission and value proposition.  It also reduces, rather than increases the numbers of projects employees are responsible for.  This provides an uplifting environment that gives each employee purpose and direction.  Furthermore, the methodology is rooted in using all available employees, not laying them off.  Those organizations that have little integration to begin with typically feel the largest benefit in employee morale.  Back

Do people's jobs get restructured and does the reporting structure change?

This depends on how well the organization is structured around the CPMs and the span of control authority associated with each CPM.  The less aligned the organization is with its CPMs, the more reorganization may need to take place.  Back

How much retraining is going to have to take place?

This depends on the organization and its personnel.  At a minimum, each individual in the organization must have a basic understanding of BPE/BPT, and this may only take one or two days of training.  Outside the basic training, training in statistical methods and data analysis may be required depending on the nature of the business and the data being analyzed.  Back
