Stephen R. Lawrence, Ph.D.
Senior Partner
Stephen R. Lawrence co-founded the Institute for BPE as a way to bring
the methods and techniques of BPE to the business community outside the
traditional classroom setting. After seeing BPE in action, Dr. Lawrence
believed that it was "the first truly integrative model" he had
seen and wanted a way to put the theory into practice. The Institute is
the medium to do just that.
In addition to his senior role in the Institute, Dr. Lawrence is the
Family of Robert H. and Beverly A. Deming Professor of Entrepreneurship
and an Associate Professor of Operations Management at the University of
Colorado at Boulder. His research and teaching interests include the
management of entrepreneurial organizations, management of technology,
capacity design and planning, and economic scheduling. Recent teaching
responsibilities include courses in business plan preparation, technology
management, and operations strategy in graduate, undergraduate, and
executive education programs.
Prior to joining the University of Colorado, Dr. Lawrence taught in
MBA, doctoral, and executive programs at Washington University in St.
Louis, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Pittsburgh. He
has worked in industry for eight years in operations management, quality
management, and sales engineering. For five of these years, he was Vice
President of Operations for Teetor Casting Co., an entrepreneurial metal
casting firm in Illinois.
Dr. Lawrence received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Engineering Science
from Purdue University, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Operations
Management from Carnegie-Mellon University. He has authored many papers
that have appeared in leading academic journals, and has won a number of
major teaching awards.

Kevin D. Schaub
Managing Partner/Senior Consultant
Kevin D. Schaub co-founded the Institute in order to teach businesses
how to realize their full potential without workforce reductions. In his
years as an engineer and graduate business student, Schaub found that most
businesses have tremendous opportunities for improvement when it comes to
aligning their human, financial and capital resources in order to maximize
profitability. Through the Institute, he is helping them do so.
Prior to co-founding the Institute for BPE, Schaub consulted in the
methods of BPE to several Colorado area companies with Dr. Lawrence and
Dr. Jeffrey Luftig. He also taught and tutored applied statistical methods
to graduate business students at the University of Colorado. Before
teaming up with Dr. Lawrence and Dr. Luftig, Schaub put some of the
methods and techniques associated with Total Quality Management into
practice during three years in the software industry.
Schaub received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and M.B.A. degree from the University
of Colorado at Boulder, where he concentrated on entrepreneurship and
organizational development and change.

Jeffrey T. Luftig, Ph.D.
Senior Instructor
Jeffrey T. Luftig joined the Institute for BPE as a senior instructor,
having spent fourteen years consulting in the methods and practices of BPE.
Dr. Luftig's heart is in teaching and he remains a full time instructor at
the University of Colorado at Boulder, but wants to continue to help
businesses realize their full potential through his teaching and
experience of achieving Business Performance Excellence.
Outside the Institute, Dr. Luftig is a senior instructor in the
Management division at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He teaches

ALCOA (U.S. and Australia), Ford Motor Company, General Motors, and Inland
Steel, to name a few.
Dr. Luftig received his B.S. degree in Industrial Education from State
University of New York, M.Ed. degree in Technology Education from Bowling
Green State University, and Ph.D. in Education, with an emphasis on
applied statistics and industrial research, from the University of
